They'll Have to Carry Me Down the Aisle in a Coffin

Baxter, Lyle and I were in the boys' room one recent morning, getting them dressed for school.

I can't remember how the topic came around to marriage, but I jokingly asked Lyle who he thinks he might marry someday. He didn't know how to answer this ridiculous question so instead focused on the fact that it would mean he could "be a fiance", an idea with which he is hilariously obsessed.

I asked Baxter if he remembered who he wanted to marry at age 3. He remembered, if only because we love the story so much. "You?" he asked, laughing. "Yes, me! And you used to cry all the time about the fact that I was already married!" He cracked up at this. (It really was funny: oh, the dramatic sobs at the dinner table!)

Lyle laughed, too. "I can't marry Mommy!" he joked.

"No, you can't, Lyle!" squealed Baxter. "And neither could I!"

"And anyway," he continued sagely, turning towards me, "what I didn't even know then is that you'll already be DEAD when I'm getting married!"

God, how I used to love that kid.

HA! Baxter's hilarous. Really. :-) But isn't it amazing what they "know"??? Where on earth do these thoughts come from? Maybe (and this will no doubt be a comfort!) it's cause our dear ones think we are older than dirt. I know I thought my mom was old when she was 35.... *sigh* Pass the Bailey's!

The Poo always grabs my hand and kisses it, then she says, "Mommy, will you maaaaaarrrry me?"

Oh, my heart just explodes every time. It never gets old.

Oh that's priceless. Tell him you'll rise from your coffin and be sure to be there, no matter what.

My little princess said "Mum, when I'm grown up and you're dead, can I have your stuff?".
I love the way kids have with words.....

What a great conversation! I love how it, uh, marries death and marriage - two towering features of adult life.

Julia's interest in death and dying has been extensively covered over at my blog, but the other day she decided we also needed to play wedding. She officiated and was the bride, but there was some discussion and mind-changing about whether she'd marry me or her sister.

Something about the idea that you will die a little bit when he gets married entered my mind. Our boys, married, sigh.

Scott is always ordering our death based on age, as in, "grandpa will die first, then grandma, ...then mom, then dad, then me, then Jane". He also seems to think that 100 is the magic age at which someone will die. I always say I hope I live to be 200!

And, he told me he is going to marry our next-door neighbor b/c then neither of them would have to move. How convenient!
